Founding Story | In 2010, Prof. Thomas Neumann and Prof. Alfons Kemper started Hyper as a research project at TU Munich. The goal was to exploit servers with large main memory capacities to design and develop a novel high-performance main memory database system. From the start, the Hyper system was designed to support both analytical and transactional workloads, enabling real-time business intelligence on real-time data. In 2015, a startup was founded that transferred the technology into the commercial space. Tobias Mühlbauer, Jan Finis, Wolf Rödiger, and Viktor Leis, who did their dissertation work in the context of the project, joined as co-founders. Already in 2016, the startup was acquired by Tableau Software, a global leader in rapid-fire, easy-to-use business analytics software. Hyper is now powering Tableau's data storage and query layer. The Hyper team in Munich currently has over 30 developers. |
